Shopping and attractions
As one of the region’s designated heritage towns, Cahir is a popular town for tourists and locals. It’s preserved much of its original character, with a small shopping precinct in the centre and plenty of independent local shops. A regular Food Market is held in the town square and a Farmer’s Market in the Craft Granary.
Most people come to see Cahir Castle or the Swiss Cottage (2km walk from the town) – then stay to explore the pretty town. You might also see people carrying fishing equipment, because the area is designated as a centre of excellence for brown trout fishing.
Cahir Castle is a beautifully-preserved defence castle, built on a rocky outcrop dramatically rising from the River Suir. It’s worth a visit – as well as the photogenic exterior, the castle’s interior has been recently restored to its former magnificence.
Getting there
Located at the intersection of two national primary routes, the Dublin–Cork M8, and the Limerick–Waterford N24, Cahir is easy to reach. It was one of the first towns on the early stagecoach route and, today, has excellent rail and bus connections.
